Profiles

My name is Lance Thompson. I have over 30-years experience as an Analogue Electronics Design Engineer within University Physical Chemistry and Biomedical research. As well as managing A T Services and maintaining this web site I provide electronic design and fabrication for our customer projects. I have experience in the design and manufacture of electronic instrumentation and control equipment ranging from femtoamperemetric and micovoltametric measurement to high power control systems. My principle engineering interests are in developing low noise instrumentation and energy management. I am also currently attached to the Sea Mammal Research Unit at St Andrews University developing miniature animal tagging devices for behavioural and oceanographic research. Other than electronic engineering I have interest in developing methods of improving energy efficiency (see leverlong.com) and am interested in family history.

I am Taimur Khan. I design digital electronics, embedded systems (PIC, ARM, DSP etc), sensor and analogue interfacing and RF telemetry systems( ISM, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Wifi, GSM/GPRS etc). I am currently a distance-learning student of MBA (Technology Management) from Open University. I am a member of Institute of Engineering and Technology, working towards the CENG status. My interests are in low-power wireless communication networks and protocols especially the lower level physical and data-link layers of the OSI model. I did my MSc (Distinction) in Radio Systems Engineering from University of Hull and BSc from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Pakistan.

A selection of Past Projects

The examples below give a flavour of the range of work we can undertake. Each of these examples are of particular client’s projects and do not represent “stock” items. We design and build specifically to our clients’ requirements, therefore please contact us for further details of what we can do for you.

A project from our Academic Technical Services activities: this 16-channel potentiostat is part of a development project in biomedical instrumentation. Used in common-electrolyte electrochemical experiments, this sixteen working electrode potentiostat has independent high speed current sensors each with a simultaneous A/D conversion and an iterative frequency up to 10Hz. Working electrode current range 10uA with an absolute analogue noise floor better than 100pA(rms) at all iterative frequencies. 16-channels of 16-bit A/D conversion gives a resolution of nearly 300pA. We can design and build instrumentation tailor-made to your research program, contact us for further information.

A project from our Applied Technical Services: this low cost domestic Electromagnetic (EM) Radiation Monitor was prototyped and developed for a client. Its target market is the domestic / home environment helping the concerned homeowner to identify sources of high EM radiation. Note this is not a gauge instrument but rather a simple to use indicator of high EM fields. As a one-stop-shop for the private innovator A T Services cannot be beaten: we can develop your idea into a product after first agreeing with you a contract of confidentiality; either your own document or our standard contract.

A project from our Assistive Technology Services in collaboration with REMAP: this device is called SpeakSoft and is used by people who have hearing difficulties. Worn discreetly, this product vibrates to inform the wearer that he or she is speaking too loud for the environment they are in. We all modulate our voice consistent with the need to be heard; we speak louder in a noisy room and softer in a quite room: we control our voice (without conscious awareness) by listening to ourselves speak. Some forms of hearing difficulty can result in this “feedback” being compromised; this is where SpeakSoft can help. This project won the Inman prize for design and engineering innovation. For further information about this product, or anything to do with Assistive Technology Services, please first contact your local REMAP secretary, details on their website.

A project from our All Together Services: the production and hosting of web pages for customers, in this instance an arts page displaying photographs and paintings by our client. Under the Associates group web page production and hosting can be very low cost, and benefit from having regular update by search-engines of new pages. Google and other search engines quickly find the new pages hosted with our Associates, and McAfee Site Advisor immediately lists your page as “Safe”. The web page can be to do with anything you wish: we currently have family history pages, holiday pages and house sale pages – but the range of use is limited only by your imagination!

High speed precision dermatome: used in toxicology research these devices are custom made to order, have a 20mm cutter with ten cutting depths and are hard-anodised. Cable drive and motor with controller are included with the dermatome. The Toxicology page has details of accompanying Membrane Integrity Meter and Diffusion Cells. We have expertise in manufacturing precision mechanical instruments and devices, and these can be from your own design or a full design service to your specification is also available.

An Instrument used in Electrochemistry for Stripping Voltammetery: a three working electrode cyclic instrument with two independent function generators. Compliance Voltage 15V. Maximum Working Electrode current 10mA per channel. Current Noise Resolution 10pA(rms). Reference Electrode Noise Voltage 10uV(rms). Fully controllable via computer or front panel adjustment, this unit can be used as a self-standing instrument or a software controlled computer peripheral.

This is another REMAP project. The client, a young boy, has difficulty using his thumbs to play his computer games console. The controls that were to be manipulated by his thumbs were extended to a foot control unit. This picture is of the foot control unit with footpads for the right and left foot taking the control of what would be the right and left thumbs. For further information about this product, or anything to do with Assistive Technology Services, please first contact your local REMAP secretary, details on their website.

Human Visio-Motor Measurement. How accurately can human observers move their unseen hand to a visually defined location? Observer moves her hand on a small trolley along a linear track. Electronic readout gives hand or finger location (precision 0.1mm, accuracy 1mm). Vision is a most important sense: but how do we see the world; how does the brain create the visual world that we perceive? These questions are addressed in academic research using equipment and instrumentation to precisely measure human response to visual stimuli.

Associates Pages includes family tree web pages, these can be fully hyper-linked or simple listings of hyper-linked names. Setting-up the page is charged for, however hosting the page could be without cost if the page carries advertising.

A tailor-made 21-Channel Computer controlled Potentiostat. This instrument has twenty-one fully independent potentiostatic channels that can be arranged in any combination of multi working electrode (common electrolyte) and or multi counter / reference electrode (isolated electrolyte) in two or three electrode configurations. Each reference / counter electrode has an independent DAC potential control, and each working electrode has an independent ADC. Analogue noise better than 10pA(rms) on the working electrode, and 16-bit A-D conversion provides a resolution of 30pA(rms).
